Recent Zweeds wetenschappelijk onderzoek vindt opnieuw aanwijzingen dat houtrook zeer schadelijke effecten heeft tijdens de zwangerschap:

Alles bij elkaar suggereren deze resultaten dat houtrook-deeltjes de trofoblast kunnen binnendringen en vroeg in de zwangerschap negatieve effecten kunnen hebben [..]. Dit kan bijdragen aan [..] zwangerschapscomplicaties zoals miskramen, vroeggeboortes, pre-eclampsie en foetale groeirestrictie.
